Choosing the Right Access Method and Reducing the Delays That Come With It
More chiropractic practices now rely on staff working beyond the front desk: mobile-visit providers, bookkeepers closing out the day from home, and front-office team members covering an out-of-office event. ChiroTouch supports three remote-access paths, listed from easiest to most complex: unattended remote access (which lets a user take control of a clinic workstation's screen), iPad remote access, and a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Each option trades setup simplicity for flexibility. Unattended remote access is the quickest to deploy because it simply mirrors an existing office computer. The iPad route gives providers and schedulers a native app without touching the office network directly. A VPN, by contrast, tunnels the remote device's ChiroTouch programs to the office server over the internet, which is the most robust choice when many users need simultaneous access—but it also introduces the most network variables to manage.
For iPad users, ChiroTouch provides remote-access capability in the Provider, Scheduler, Forms, Outcome Assessments, and CTIntake applications; there is no Front Desk app for iPad. If an iPad loses its connection, the first step is to run the Mobile Service Manager on the server as an Administrator and confirm the device is pointing to the correct IP address. Payment workflows add another reason to get remote access right: CT Pay lets staff process and post transactions from anywhere, including mobile chiropractic visits or billing done from a home office, so a dropped or sluggish connection can stall revenue collection at the moment a patient is waiting for a receipt.
Understanding why a connection feels slow is the next step, and the key distinction is between bandwidth and latency. Bandwidth is the width of the pipe—how much data can flow at once—while latency is the round-trip time a single packet takes to reach its destination and get a response, measured in milliseconds. A practice can have a gigabit internet line and still experience a sluggish ChiroTouch session if the round-trip time is high, if Wi-Fi interference is adding jitter, or if a firewall is inspecting every packet before it reaches the server. In general, wired Ethernet connections deliver lower and more consistent latency than Wi-Fi, so mission-critical workstations that run ChiroTouch charting, billing, or CT ProClear claim submissions benefit from a direct cable run to the switch. If a remote user must work over Wi-Fi, they should aim for a strong, stable signal and avoid congested 2.4 GHz channels whenever possible.
Before calling for a heavier fix, run through the troubleshooting checklist that applies to both server-based and ChiroTouch Cloud accounts. Confirm the server and every slow workstation meet the published minimum system requirements; verify the time, date, and time zone are correct on the server and on the affected machine; make sure Windows Updates (including .NET optional updates) are current; and reboot both the server and the lagging workstation. If the slow computer is wireless, test it on a wired connection to rule out signal degradation. For server-based accounts, the SQL Server service and the ChiroTouch Communicator Service on the server box are the two services most often at fault when the application will not open or reminders stop going out—restarting them through the Windows Services console resolves a large share of those tickets. By matching the access method to the job, keeping critical workstations on wired connections, and measuring before you upgrade, most practices can keep ChiroTouch fast enough that an off-site day feels no different from a shift at the front desk.
